There are many millions of sheep in New Zealand - some ten times the human population which is currently a little over 4 million. In the 1970s and 1980 there were as many as 70-80 million sheep.

Actually there are only three named Fiords in New Zealand, and these are on the western shore of Lake Te Anau. All the other fiords are named sounds, and Milford Sound would be the best known.

A (ex-glacial) Sound is so named because of the mound of glacial debris at its mouth were it enters the ocean, and in some sounds, this required depth measurement by an entering ship, hence the 'sound' name. Other sounds are not ex-glacial at all, Plymouth Sound would be one such, but the name has the same origin.
