Ortho means "straight" and pedics means "related to children". In the old days when rickets was rampant the crooked and bent children used to be straightened by traction and the branch of medicine was called orthopedics. Now it has evolved into a more specialised branch but orthopedist are still doing pretty much the same thing ie straightening bones
