Percocet is a brand name drug (by Endo), containing oxycodone and acetaminophen (APAP). Oxycodone is an opioid (narcotic), and acetaminophen is a weak analgesic that, when taken with oxycodone, provides greater analgesia than either drug alone. Percocet is approved for the management of moderate to moderately severe pain.

Oxycodone has a high potential for abuse/dependence and when possible is best taken for short periods of time. However long-term use of opioids including oxycodone may be appropriate in certain situations.

Addiction is actually fairly rare when oxycodone is taken for a legitimate medical problem however people with a personal or family history of drug/alcohol abuse have a greater risk of developing addiction.

Legally oxycodone is a schedule II controlled substance in The United States.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:

  • shallow breathing, slow heartbeat;
  • feeling light-headed, fainting;
  • confusion, unusual thoughts or behavior;
  • seizure (convulsions); or
  • nausea, stomach pain, loss of appetite, itching, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Less serious side effects include:

  • feeling dizzy or drowsy;
  • mild nausea, vomiting, upset stomach, constipation;
  • blurred vision; or
  • dry mouth.

The drug Percodan is a DEA Schedule 2 Controlled Substance, and a morphine derivative. It is a combination drug consisting of Oxycodone and Aspirin. Percocet, the more commonly prescribed sister drug of Percodan, is Oxycodone with Tylenol.

Percodan isn't prescribed as much because of its Aspirin component. Aspirin can break down over time, rendering the drug useless. Percodan is generally prescribed for acute pain, and only for short periods because constant use of Aspirin can cause other problems.
