RQD is an acronym that stands for Rock Quality Designation. It is intended to give an indication of the quality of a rock mass (the number of joints and fractures). It is derived based on the quantity of intact pieces from a drill core that are greater than 10 cm in length as a percentage of the total length of the core or core run.

What is geological core logging?
Core logging is the method of studying the various futures of the rock obtained after exploration. some of the features which study in core logging are. 1. core recovery percentage: core recovered/length of run *100 2. minor structures present on the core. The minor structures are important because these leads to ascertain the major Geological structures. 3. RQD which is import for mining engineers:sum of no: of pieces of the core present above 10 cms. 4. Useful to known the actual thickness of each lithology. 5. By giving samples at regular intervals we can know the chemical variation of the deposit.
