The concept of Stockholm Syndrome has been elaborated and can be applied to a number of varying situations. Originally, though the name comes from an incident in Stockholm where hostages were taken and kept for a number of days. By the time the hostages were released they had developed sympathy and affection for their captors. So basically Stockholm Syndrome occurs when an individual develops affection and becomes attached to someone who is harming them or keeping them in an unhealthy situation not just despite the abuse but because of the abuse.
The online Merriam-Webster dictionary defines it as "the psychological tendency of a hostage to bond with, identify with, or sympathize with his or her captor." Stockholm syndrome is a defense mechanismus in wich people when they are harmed or tortured by someone think that that had to happen. In that case they sympathize with their tormentors or captors. Usualy in that case they defend the tormentors when police aresst them, or try to understand them like,, He probably had a bad childhood and that why he is tormenting me now''.
