State controlled capitalism forms the basis to the economic system that's found in the Republic of Suriname. The profit motive is considered the hallmark of capitalism. Evidence of such a motive, from the local to the national levels, may be found in the continuous presence of the Alcoa subsidiary Suralco in Suriname since 1916.

The capitalist economic system is considered to be under state control when there's a strong, centralizing national influence over banking, business, and political economy. Such control may be found in the absolute requirement of all business activity and business people to be registered with the Republic's sole Chamber of Commerce.
