It depends on where you live in Australia really, as it is a rather large country and the interior has different temperatures from the coast. There is no "average".

Summer daytime temperatures can range from just 17 degrees Celsius in Tasmania one day to 30 degrees the next. Victorian temperatures can be similarly low one day, yet they can just as easily experience weeks of a heatwave, in which daytime temperatures exceed 44 degrees. The deserts can be much hotter, of course, whilst in the far north, temperatures are not so much hot (34 degrees or so) as they are humid, making outside conditions very sticky and uncomfortable.

Probably one of the more temperate regions would be southeast Queensland, where temperatures are a little more consistent, averaging 28 to 33 degrees.

Similarly, Australia's average winter temperatures cannot be determined. Temperatures in winter range from below 0 degrees Celsius in the Australian Alps to a balmy maximum of 28 degrees Celsius or higher, often up to 32 degrees Celsius in Darwin, which is in the tropical north.

There is no easily determined "average" for temperature. Australia is a huge continent covering a variety of weather and climatic conditions. Temperatures in the north will vary considerably from those in the south. Similarly, temperatures anywhere along the coast will be greatly different from those inland.

Sydney has a warm temperate climate, having characteristics of both maritime and humid subtropical climate zones (it is in a transitional zone). Its climate is mostly mild, with winters not too cold and summers generally not too hot (at least by Australian standards).

Average summer temp is at 26C, although in the west it is warmer, reaching 28-30C. Summers are not as humid as Brisbane nor as dry as Adelaide's. The heat tends to be variable, at times being dry heat and others being humid heat. Temperatures, however, can easily exceed 30 degrees Celsius in summer, and even 40 degrees, which is not something seen further north. See the related link below for more weather extremes.

Rainfall is spread throughout the year with a dry tendency in late winter-spring and wet tendency in late summer-autumn. The city's average yearly rainfall is around 1,200mm, while the west averages at 750-800m.

Sydney may experience some drought in spring and summer caused by hot northwesterly winds that come from the desert (which are prevalent at the time of the year). At times they often end with thunder and rain.

Winters are usually around 16C-18C, with June being the wettest winter month. However, conditions go dry in July and August (mid-late winter). Frost is an occasional occurrence inland, or in the west, with nights dipping to -1C.

Sydney's yearly sunshine hours are around 2600, spread over an average of aound 340 sunny days. The west has a higher amount, at 2700. Average 3pm humidity is around 57%, whilst inland it's as low as 49%.

Sydney has a temperate climate with warm summers and cool winters, and rainfall spread throughout the year.[35] The weather is moderated by proximity to the ocean, and more extreme temperatures are recorded in the inland western suburbs. The warmest month is January, with an average air temperature range at Observatory Hill of 18.6-25.8 °C (65-78 °F). An average of 14.6 days a year have temperatures of more than 30 °C (86.0 °F). The maximum recorded temperature was 45.3 °C (113.5 °F) on 14 January 1939 at the end of a four-day heatwave across Australia.[36]

In winter, temperatures rarely drop below 5 °C (41 °F) in coastal areas. The coldest month is July, with an average range of 8.0-16.2 °C (46-61 °F). The lowest recorded minimum at Observatory Hill was 2.1 °C (35.8 °F). Rainfall is fairly evenly divided between summer and winter, but is slightly higher during the first half of the year, when easterly winds dominate.[citation needed]

The average annual rainfall, with moderate to low variability, is 1,217 mm (48 in), falling on an average 138 days a year.[37] Snowfall was last reported in the Sydney City area in 1836.[38] However, a July 2008 fall of graupel, or soft hail, mistaken by many for snow, has raised the possibility that the 1836 event was not snow, either.[39]
