"A zigzag is a pattern made up of small corners at variable angles, though constant within the zigzag, tracing a path between two parallel lines; it can be described as both jagged and fairly regular. Traditionally a "zig" points in the left direction (/) and a "zag" points right (\). From the point of view of symmetry, a regular zigzag can be generated from a simple motif like a line segment by repeated application of a glide reflection." ~ Wikipedia

A zigzag transformer is used in connection with 3 phase and is made up of 6 coils connected in a "Y" manner. Each leg of the "Y" is made up of a coil on a different phase leg of the transformer. The neutral formed by the zigzag connection is very stable. Therefore, this type of transformer, or in some cases an auto transformer, lends itself very well for establishing a neutral for an ungrounded 3 phase system. Many times this type of transformer or auto transformer, lends itself very well for establishing a neutral for an ungrounded 3 phase system. Many times this type of transformer or auto transformer will carry a fairly large rating, yet physically be relatively small. This particularly applies in connection with grounding applications. The reason for this small size in relation to the nameplate KVA rating is due to the fact that many types of grounding auto Transformers are rated for 2 seconds. This is based on the time to operate an overcurrent protection device such as a breaker. Zigzag transformers used to be employed to enable size reductions in drive motor systems due to the stable wave form they present. Other means are now more common, such as 6 phase star.

Speed of World War 2 convoys crossing the north Atlantic?

The speed of the convoys going across the Atlantic depended on the slowest ship in the group. The convoys were further slowed down by traveling in a zigzag pattern to avoid being an easy target for U-boats. The speed of a convoy was seldom more than 15 knots.

Why are trenches zigzag and not straight?

Because if an enemy got into the trenches, theycould stand at one end with a gun and fire continuously and wipe out everyone, having zig zags helps prevent this! The trenches were also zig-zagged because if an enemy shell landed in the trench, it could wipe out a whole platoon if the trench was straight!

Tactics used during Trojan War?

The Greeks made an unopposed amphibious landing on the coast near Troy, and then proceeded to invest the city of Troy and lay siege to it. However the siege was neither particularly close nor effective. The Greeks lacked artillery, or "siege engines" such as catapults, with which to batter the walls of Troy, to create a breach through which the infantry might enter and storm the city. The knowledge of siege warfare had not been perfected at that time to the point where trained military engineers could direct the tightening of the siege lines thruogh "regular aproaches"". These were ever closer rings of concentric trench lines, advanced by digging forward a zigzag "parallel" in the night, then commencing the new, closer trench, or "line of circumvallation". Eventually the besieging force might get close enough to dig under the foundations of the city walls, "undermining" them and causing them to tumble down and thus create a breach for storming. Later generations also learned to accomplish undermining by tunneling. Lacking this developed knowledge of siege warfare, and lacking artillery or siege engines, the Greeks could only seek to cut off Troy from the outside, and eventually starve the city into submission. They did not have a sufficient force to keep the city completely surrounded, and were ineffective in keeping traffic from getting in or out, which allowed resupply. Cities of that day routinely kept sufficient water and food stored within the walls to last for a year or two, in the event an enemy descended on the city and laid siege, but the siege of Tray lasted ten years. Eventually the Greeks were able to infiltrate a force into the city through deception (inside a large wooden statue of a horse), and this force slipped out of cover in the night and opened the city gates to a storming force. When Troy was found in the 1800s archeologists found that Troy had been burned and rebuilt eight times. It was estimated the famous fall of the Iliad and the Odyssey was the third time.

Name of World War 2 ship carrying bomb that was sunk?

You're probably thinking of the USS Indianapolis. This was a heavy cruiser that had just delivered the bomb to Tinian Island, in the Marianas. The ship was proceeding to the Philippines and was not zigzagging. Sailing with unpredictable, irregular zigs and zags to each side of the base course was a standard tactic to throw off the attacks of any submarines, but it made the trip much longer than just sailing along a straight course. At any rate the commander of the Japanese submarine which sank her was captured at the end of the war and testified that in this instance, it would have made no difference in his attack, as his sub was so positioned that he would have been able to torpedo her anyway. Japanese submarines had been sighted in the area but this information was not relayed to the USS Indianapolis. The ship was torpedoed and sank. It was about four days overdue in the Philippines before the naval authorities remembered to wonder what had become of her, which is inexcusable. About 880 or more of the crew went into the water, and over the next four days a huge school of sharks was attracted and ate hundreds of the men floating in their life jackets. After the floating survivors were accidentally spotted by a patrolling flying boat, 316 survivors were finally rescued. In the finest traditions of the US Navy, somebody had to pay, and its best if it can be the party LEAST at fault in a disaster, so the captain of the USS Indianapolis was court-martialed, the only commander in the entire history of the US Navy to be court-martialed for losing his ship in wartime. He was charged with dereliction of duty for not having the ship zigzag. It eventually came out that the three distress radio signals sent by the Indianapolis after being torpedoed were received, though at first the Navy claimed they were not. These signals were not acted on because the first commander responsible was drunk, the next had told his men not to bother him, and the third decided it must be a Japanese fake. To protect all the pinheads who did not warn the captain of Japanese submarine activity in the area, and forgot to even wonder where this major ship was until reports came in of hundreds of US sailors being pulled from the water, (is anybody missing a ship?), and ignored the ship's distress calls, the captain, Captain Charles B. McVay III, was convicted and his career ruined. He committed suicide in 1968. The US Congress passed a resolution in 2000 and President Clinton signed it, which said "he is exonerated for the loss of the Indianapolis" and his record should so state, but the Navy has done nothing and so far as the records of the Navy reflect, McVay is still guilty. The ship's story and the ordeal in the water have been told several times in movies and books. Robert Shaw's character in the 1975 movie "Jaws", the shark hunter, in a monologue relates that he was a survivor and the endless shark attacks were his motivation to become a shark hunter.
