The term five star hotel is always associated with the ultimate luxury (and, by implication, expense). The lack of standardisation has allowed marketing-driven inflation, with some hotels claiming six stars; at one point the Burj al- Arab marketed itself as "the world's first seven-star hotel". Well-established prestige hotels are usually content to claim the traditional five. Lacking a standard definition, and an adequate advertising budget, anyone can claim a million star rating on a chicken coop. A Five Star Standard is not presented without consistent service over a long period. Rarely is a facility granted this accolade on opening day. The industry knows that a certain standard is expected. Customers know what to expect. A rare few Boutique hotels, serve a limited clientele and remain unconcerned with rating competition. Their customers know the management, know the quality of service, know the staff. Splash and Pizzazz are not relevant to ratings. Quality, Service and Consistency are all that count.
