The rotating part is called to be the crank and the piston which is made to move forword and backword is said to be the the slider. in case of automobiles the input energy or the valve motion of the slider rotates tehe crank as well and the force that has been supplied to the slider produces the torque on the crank which helps in the rotation of the wheel as aresult the vehical starts moving. The other examples are Reciprocating pumps, Reciprocating comprssor etc. And also in case of the Typewriter,Clocks etc, the force that has been suplied to the slider is unable to over come the friction of the crank and hence the force is utilise as much it is required

The crank and slider is a mechanism with a rotating disk, a slider which slides into a tube, and a connecting rod which joins the parts together. As the slider moves to the right, the connecting rod pushes the wheel around for the first 180 degrees of wheel rotation. When the slider begins to move back into the tube, the connecting rod pulls the wheel around to complete the rotation. It often refers to a human powered crank.
