There are many functions of Excel but this can be generalised by saying it is used for numerical analysis and manipulation. So you are mainly dealing with working on calculations on numbers for a huge amount of potential reasons. Just about anything you want to do with numbers you can do in a spreadsheet. There is a lot more that you can do too, like graphs and diagrams.
Excel comes with a lot of pre-defined functions. These are grouped into various categories. One of the categories is Financial functions. These would be used to do various things that would be or use to people in the finance world. For example there are functions to work out rates of interest, the amount of a payment for a loan in order to pay the loan off in a set amount of time, depreciation of value of assets, future values of investments and many others. These types of functions would be used by people in financial services, such as bankers or Accountants or stockbrokers or investment managers and so on. These people would be familiar with these functions and would know how to use them and when to use them. Most users of Excel would have no use for them and would not ever use them.
Using the financial functions Excel is capable of doing a lot of important things that a business would need to know in terms of investments or loans it has or assets it has. In planning for the future for example, they would we be able to work out how much income they will need to maintain the payments they have to make to people who have loaned them money for their business. Excel has many uses in the financial world, beyond the specialised financial functions. People in doing things for financial calculations would also use many of the more regular functions that Excel has. A spreadsheet is a very useful piece of software to people who are in any way dealing with financial matters.
