For schools that operate on a four point scale the grade point average is calculated from the following:
* 4.0 = A * 3.0 = B * 2.0 = C * 1.0 = D (minimum pass/not transferable to another institution) * 0.0 = F (failure) Some schools use a minus system while others a plus system. For example: a grade of B+ can be a 3.5 for instance, thus C+, D+, or A-, B-, C-.
The grades A,B,C,D,F are given the numbers 4,3,2,1,0. Thus if you have 4 As in one semester your Grade Point Average (GPA) for that semester would be 4. If you had 2 As and 2 Cs your GPA would be 3. You add up the numerical score of your grades and divide by the number of courses. As a complication, some classes give more "credit" than others, so that you have to give more or less weight to the grade in the course, depending on how many credits the course counts for. For example, a 2-credit course counts for only half as much as a 4-credit course.
There are a number of different conversion scales. However, the best one I've come across is as follows:
GPA Percentile Letter Grade
4.0 --- 95 + up -- A 3.9 --- 94 -------- A 3.8 --- 93 -------- A 3.7 --- 92 -------- A 3.6 --- 91 -------- A 3.5 --- 90 -------- A 3.4 --- 89 -------- B 3.3 --- 88 -------- B 3.2 --- 87 -------- B 3.1 --- 86 -------- B 3.0 --- 85 -------- B 2.9 --- 84 -------- B 2.8 --- 83 -------- B 2.7 --- 82 -------- B 2.6 --- 81 -------- B 2.5 --- 80 -------- B 2.4 --- 79 -------- C 2.3 --- 78 -------- C 2.2 --- 77 -------- C 2.1 --- 76 -------- C 2.0 --- 75 -------- C 1.9 --- 74 -------- C 1.8 --- 73 -------- C 1.7 --- 72 -------- C 1.6 --- 71 -------- C 1.5 --- 70 -------- C 1.4 --- 69 -------- D
Students are graded on a scale of 1 to 100 (percentage) or a letter-grade scale from F to A. These letters or numbers can be translated to a Grade Point Average on a 4 or 5-point scale. Therefore, an A would give a 4.0, an A- would give a 3.7, a B+ would give a 3.3, etc. A five-point scale would allow for an extra point for honors or AP weighting.
The highest GPA in college is 4.0, which means you received all A's. 3.0 means you have a B average. 2.0 is a C average. Below that generally means you would not be allowed to continue your studies at most colleges.
On a 4.0 scale with 4.0 being the highest the below is an example depending on the schools grading system.
There are some schools that grade on a minus system.

The most common scale is 4.0
3.0
That depends on whether your honors classes were regular high school classes or AP or International Baccalaureate classes, which may have been calculated on a 5.0 GPA scale. A GPA of 4.3 on a 5.0 scale is the equivalent of 3.44 on a 4.0 GPA scale.

I believe on a 4.0 scale the lowest GPA you can have is a 2.5

First, it is an excellent GPA and equivalent to a letter grade of A.
If it is based on a 100% scale, yes, it is a good GPA.
