Gibson Baldwin is an educational series Les Paul Style Guitar. They have some budget features hence the low price, for example "bolt-on neck" instead of "set-in neck". Interestingly, they have the trademark Gibson "Open-book" Headstock design. Usually this design is reserved for Gibson USA models. Not even the Gibson Epiphone series has this style headstock. Made in China however Chinese instruments are gaining a positive reputation, quality from China is improving rapidly and the Gibson Baldwin is good value for the money.

To better clarify this conversation, one should know the history and currents events of these Companies.

If you are trying to use this information on making a decided purchase of said Guitars, knowledge of what you want to buy as either something "Vintage" or "New" has importance, and quality has its quirks throughout the years of each company.

In respect to the current Decade of these manufactured guitars, here is my take.

Gibson owned Baldwin Student guitars are made in Countries; China, Indonesia India. Woods can range from plywood, to Agathis or lesser varieties of multiple pieces of wood glued together. Not that they are made purposely inferior, they are made to be affordable. Remember as a student model guitar the point is "why spend a lot of money if the student may lose interest".

Epiphone: Years and years ago, Epiphone was building a better instrument than Gibson, hence for the eventual buyout of Epiphone. The price was attractive and the quality was very good. Gibson bought the company and turned Epiphone into a medium quality company as a cheaper version of the Gibson Brand. The "Epi" brand was being made in Asian countries and over years of experience the Japanese manufactures were outdoing American made guitars. As time went "Epis" have been made overseas in what has become premier manufacturers of very well made guitars. There are some model "Epis" that are made to be less expensive, but that is from Gibson outsourcing different models to lesser quality minded factories. Japanese and Korean Epiphones are very good quality quitars and worth their value. As of 2004 Gibson opended the Epiphone Factory in China. Their idea is to make this factory a premier plant with state of the art equipment and much more on the Higher Quality than any other Asian factory. As I have owned, repaired, modified and played both Epiphone and Gibson guitars through the years, for the money I will recommend Epiphone over a USA made Gibson. I do believe Gibson has a long range plan to eventually outsource USA Gibsons to this factory as a Custom Shop version. But remember, there are several "FAKE" Chinese made copies out there. And Hell I've seen them too and they aren't bad for the money.

The downside in my opinion is the American Workers are getting hurt with the Cost of an American Made Guitar.

Lastly, you can always buy a guitar for a family heirloom, since 20 years from now they won't be made out of wood and you might just be sitting on a guitar worth $100,000 one day. Wishfull thinking.

Gibson. Epiphone is a lower step of Gibson.

Epiphones are the better guitar. Baldwins are an educational brand, although still good value for money. Both are a "lower step of Gibson"i must correct this answer because epiphone is a secondary unit of gibson there for gibson is better in guitar baldwin is better known for pianos but epiphones are not bad there are some models that are very very good the main diffrents in gibson and epiphones is price,just remember in musical equipment most of the time you get what you pay for.
