JPEG or otherwise known as joint photographic experts group is a file compression technique which nenables image file sizes to be reduced by as much as 96 percent with unnoticeable loss of detail.
It is a kind of graphic image. The file size is smaller than some other images, so it takes up less memory, which is one reason that it is a popular format.
