Everyone participating in the exchange must donate a gift to get a gift. To start the game you have to pick someone at random. Normally names in a hat will work. The first person that is chosen goes and picks a gift. They have to open it in front of everyone and show them what it is. That person gets to pick the next name out of the hat. The next person chosen can either grab a gift from the pile, or steal a previous gift from someone else. If a persons gift is stolen, they get to go pick another present from the pile and open it, and show everyone. This continues until the last person gets their gift.
It is not customary to bring a gift to a bachelorette party but you can do something gift exchange-y. If there is going to be a gift exchange the host will usually tell you.

Yes. Every second Friday in the month of may there is Exchange Gift Day, where you exchange gifts with people in your family. :)
The purpose of gift exchange is to show someone that you care about them. A small but personal gift is often enough to show someone that they are loved.
Traditional Mexican families don't exchange presents during Christmas; they do so during the Epiphany celebration (January 6). The Three Kings or Biblical Magi are those "responsible" for delivering gifts to the Mexican children.
I promise to not exchange your gift.
No, a gift is not a contract because nothing of value was given in exchange.
