A motte and bailey castle is a castle built in the medieval period. They was built by King William who was Norman (french) when he first rose to the throne. He built loads of them stratigicly dotted around England to try and reduce the number of rebellions. Motte and Bailey castles were made out of wood and could burn easily and it would rot pretty quickly. Some of the castles were upgraded into concentric castles which were made out of stone.
