SSID means service set identifier, basically it is a name given to a wireless network. It makes it easier to identify and select different networks from a list.

From Wikipedia:

The SSID can be up to 32 characters long. As the SSID displays to users, it normally consists of human-readable characters. However, the standard does not require this. The SSID is defined as a sequence of 1-32 octets each of which may take any value.

It's so that you can tell wifi networks apart, if more than one of them happen to be in range at the same time. If they were all just called "network," how would you know which one you wanted to connect to?

An SSID is the name of a wireless local area network (WLAN). All wireless devices on a WLAN must employ the same SSID in order to communicate with each other.

The SSID on wireless clients can be set either manually, by entering the SSID into the client network settings, or automatically, by leaving the SSID unspecified or blank.

How do you get around ssid's for WiFi connections?

What do you mean "Get around" SSID's? You need the SSID to ID what you want to connect to. The SSID is used to ID the Access point of the network. You "select" the SSID of the network you want to connect to. There is no reason to "get around" the SSID. It IS what you need to use to connect to the network. What do you mean "Get around" SSID's?
