An annular eclipse or annular solar eclipse is when the moon isn't close enough to the Earth during a solar eclipse to cover the whole circumference of the Sun, leaving a ring of light around the Moon.

There is no such thing as an annular lunar eclipse.

In an annular solar eclipse, the Moon is at its most distant point from Earth when the Moon slides across the Sun, and forms a "ring" eclipse in which the edges of the Sun are visible with the Moon blocking the middle.

In an lunar eclipse, the possibilities are penumbral, partial and total. In a penumbral eclipse, the Moon is only partway into the Earth's shadow, and is only slightly dimmed. In a partial eclipse, the Moon passes by the darkest part of the earth's shadow, the "umbra", but misses.

An annular (or "ring of fire") eclipse is a SOLAR eclipse, not a lunar eclipse. Annular solar eclipses happen when the Moon is at or near apogee, its farthest distance from the Earth, and so the Moon's disk appears to be smaller than the Sun. So at maximum eclipse, there's a black silhouette of the Moon, with the edge of the Sun extending all the way around.
