Anorexia is a food disorder in which the victim starves him/ her self to lose weight. Girls from ages 15 - 25 are most vulnerable to the eating disorder. Girls with anorexia have a higher level of serotonin. Serotonin plays a role in appetite to regain homeostasis. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter involved in sleep, depression, and memory. This happens because the girls want to lower their serotonin level by starving themselves. The human body however wants to regain homeostasis in other words gain balance. So the body produces even more serotonin in efforts to regain homeostasis.

One in every 100 girls in the U.S is diagnosed with anorexia. Anorexia is most common in the dance world because dancers want to be thin.

It is when you eat in small porportions ( and you're actually hungry!), hide food in your pocket, don't eat anything, count how many calories you eat per meal ( like your young and start saying 130 calories is going to make you gain 10 lbs or something like that) Just remember YOU SHOULDN'T DO THAT!

Anorexia is the medical term used to describe a condition of not eating. In fact, the word itself is made up of two Greek root words, an- meaning "not", and the verb orein which means "to eat". So quite literally, anorexia means "not to eat".

Anorexia is a broad term, used to describe failure to eat due to any cause. Perhaps the most familiar use of the term "anorexia" is actually a shortening of the true medical term anorexia nervosa, which refers to a failure to eat due to a psychological imbalance, often accompanied by an altered body image.

Anorexia nervosa is a complex eating disorder with three key features:

  • refusal to maintain a healthy body weight
  • an intense fear of gaining weight
  • a distorted body image

Because of your dread of becoming fat or disgust with how your body looks, eating and mealtimes may be very stressful. And yet, what you can and can't eat is practically all you can think about.

Thoughts about dieting, food, and your body may take up most of your day-leaving little time for friends, family, and other activities you used to enjoy. Life becomes a relentless pursuit of thinness and going to extremes to lose weight.

But no matter how skinny you become, it's never enough.

While people with anorexia often deny having a problem, the truth is that anorexia is a serious and potentially deadly eating disorder. Fortunately, recovery is possible. With proper treatment and support, you or someone you care about can break anorexia's self-destructive pattern and regain health and self-confidence.
