The most basic difference is the size of the government.

Democrats believe in big government, Republicans believe in small or limited government.

The reason for this is because of how Democrats and Republicans believe a country should operate, and how big or small a part government should play in our day to day lives.

In recent years both parties have moved from a center political position to the extreme right or left of each side. As a consequence they seems unable to compromise on any issue that needs to be decided to run the government. The Democratic Party is has a platform that is more interested in the common good the people while the Republican position seems to be for the rich and to cut programs that benefit people who need them to enrich the wealthy.

Bill Clinton, a Democratic president, once said "Democrats do not believe government can do everything, but we believe there are some things it must do."
