Use it in the same way you use regular basil - in tomato dishes, pesto, any vegetable, especially beans, peppers, eggplants, soups, and stuffings. Greek basil has the advantage over normal basil of having smaller leaves and softer stems. It's flavor is also quite strong.

Medicinally, it has antibacterial and antispasmodic properties, and can be applied to insect bites.

Basil is a herb, commonly used fresh. Dried basil is widely available but inferior, and typically without specification of the variety.

Sweet Italian basil is often used in Italian cooking. It harmonizes well with tomato, mustard, goats cheese, or soft cheeses such as fresh Mozzarella. Sweet Italian basil is also used for traditional pesto, a blend of basil, toasted pine kernels, garlic oil, Parmesan cheese and olive oil.

Sweet Thai basil is frequently used in south-east Asian cooking, such as Vietnamese, Cambodian and Thai cuisine. Fresh Thai basil leaves are used in stir-fries and soups. Compared to the commonly used sweet Italian variety, Thai basil is slightly purple in color and has a note of mint in flavor.

Hot Mexican basil is slightly peppery in taste. The fresh leaves are good for use with pasta, in salads, or with white fish.

These three types of basil are very distinct and cannot be used to replace each other. Other varieties of basil will exist.

Because the oils in basil are highly volatile, it is best to add it near the end of the cooking process, so it will retain its maximum flavor.

You can enjoy basil in many ways:

  • Blend fresh basil into your salad dressing. It helps kill bacteria on raw salad vegetables.
  • Combine fresh chopped basil with garlic and olives to make a healthy pesto to use on whole wheat pasta or brushetta.
  • Layer fresh basil leaves over tomato slices and mozzarella, tofu, or avocado to create a colorful and delicious caprese salad.
  • Give your stir fry a Thai flair by adding basil to eggplant, cabbage, chili peppers, tofu, and cashews.
  • Purée basil, olives, and onions in a food processor or blender and add to tomato soups.
  • Enjoy a warm cup of invigorating basil tea by infusing chopped basil leaves in boiling water for eight minutes.
