Well since 'bio' is a word associated with living things, and 'graphy' is a prefix that is usually about a work, an art or a field of study, one would assume that a biography is a work or a piece of art associated with a living thing.

Actually, it's a book written by someone about someone else, usually a famous person. An autobiography is a book written by a person about their own life, and a biography is when the book is written about a person but not by the person themselves.

I am writing a paper on Charles W. Chestnutt and I need help finding four or five biographical facts that you argue are the determining factors why they became the kind of writer they are?

To answer your question, I went to Google and searched for /Charles Chestnutt/, then followed the link the Charles Chestnutt Digital Library: http://faculty.berea.edu/browners/chesnutt/intro.html If you click on /Related Links/ on the menu to the left, you'll find a few helpful sites under the heading "Course Sites, Historical Sites, Biographical Sites, Commercial Sites." Unfortunately, most are broken. But I found two that are still live and will probably be very helpful to you. PAL: Perspectives in American Literature - A Research and Reference Guide - An Ongoing Project http://lead.csustan.edu/english/reuben/pal/chap6/chesnutt.html Once here, click on link to /A Brief Bilbliography/. In paragraph two, you can read that Chestnutt was mixed race, which contributed strongly to Chesnutt's sense of alienation. To include this in your paper, you may try to trace the themes of alienation or hybridity in his stories. The next viable link is from the Digital Library is here: Library of America http://loa.org/chesnutt/ From here, click on /Biography/ in menu toward the middle of the page. In paragraph one, you can read that Chestnutt was born to freed parents that moved from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Ohio. In paragraph two, you can read that, upon reaching adulthood, Chestnutt moved back to Fayetteville to become a teacher at the State Colored Normal School. Finally, paragraph three, we learn that he eventually returned to Ohio, "Discouraged by the end of Reconstruction and the restoration of white supremacy in the South." To find how these biographical elements may have affected his work, look for how Chestnutt constructs the post-Civil War South in his stories. Does he feature migration or mobility as an important theme? What about education? Is his work generally hopeful or "discouraged?" How does Chestnutt portray relationships between white and black characters? How does he build and demonstrate the power dynamic that emerged in the Reconstruction? In case you're not familiar with the Reconstruction, you can learn more about it here: America's Reconstruction: People and Politics After the CIvil War http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/reconstruction/index.html I found the above site with a quick Google search for /reconstruction/. In brief, the Reconstruction was an attempt to restore the South from the ravages of the war and integrate the freed slaves into society. In reality, it was one of the most violent and tumultuous periods of American History. c
