The tale begins on Christmas Eve seven years after the death of Ebenezer Scrooge's business partner Jacob Marley. That night , the ghost of Jacob Marley appears before Scrooge and warns him that his soul will be bearing heavy chains for eternity if he does not change his greedy ways, and also predicts that a series of other ghosts will follow. Three Christmas ghosts visit Scrooge during the course of the night, fulfilling Marley's prophecy. The first, the Ghost of Christmas Past, takes Scrooge to the scenes of his boyhood and youth which stir the old skinflint's gentle and tender side. The second spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Present, takes Scrooge to three radically differing scenes (a joy-filled market of people buying the makings of Christmas dinner, the family feast of Scrooge's near-impoverished clerk Bob Crachit, and a homeless family huddled around an open fire) in order to evince from the miser a sense of responsibility for his fellow man. The third spirit, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, harrows Scrooge with dire visions of the future if he does not learn and act upon what he has witnessed. When the book opens, we are introduced to Ebeneezer Scrooge and his late partner, Jacob Marley. Marley had died seven years previously on Christmas Eve. On this particular Christmas Eve, Marley is allowed to visit Scrooge to warn him of the captivity that awaits his soul because of his wicked nature. Scrooge will, Marley informs him, be visited by three other spirits who will also convince him of the errors of his life.

The book takes the reader through each of the three visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come. Through each visitation the reader is introduced to various characters from his past and present who help us understand the choices that Scrooge has made from his youth and helped to create the miser and tyrant that he has become. The spirit of Christmas Yet to Come provides a hint that Scrooge's own demise will be a most unhappy one, alone, and mourned by no one.

By the end of these visits, Scrooge has determined to change his life and keep the spirit of Christmas throughout the year. To this end he commits to assist his lowly clerk, Bob Cratchit, and establishes a relationship with his only livling relative, his nephew Fred. The reader is left to understand that Scrooge did "all this, and more." Scrooge has become a new man.
