Carbon atoms are defined as those atoms which have 6 protons in their nucleus. Aside from that I will note that carbon is a very important element. All forms of life that we know of, including ourselves, could not exist without carbon atoms.

Carbon is an element. Elements are made of atoms.

So, carbon is made of atoms.

Usually the atoms are joined together by chemical bonds.

Carbon can take several different forms (allotropes).

For example, graphite and diamond are allotropes of carbon. They differ in the way the bonding between the carbon atoms occurs.

A carbon atom contains 6 protons, 6 electrons, and either 6 (carbon-12), 7 (carbon-13), or 8 (carbon-14) neutrons. The atomic number of carbon is 6, which tells you the number of protons and electrons; the Atomic Mass - atomic number = number of neutrons.
