There are two things that are called "chain mail" and they're quite different from each other:
1) Chain mail (letter form) is mail that asks you to copy it and send it forward to a number of friends. Often it is a petition where you are asked to sign your name and send it forward, or a warning about some (usually made-up) threat. They can be something silly like jokes or threats that if you don't send the mail forward you'll magically get ill or die. Nowadays chain letters are sent by e-mail and it's a form of human-spread computer virus. Most if not all bulk mail that asks you to send it forward is just a scam and should be deleted.
2) Chain mail is also a kind of medieval armoury that has several small metallic rings (chains) attached to each other. Chain mail is a suit of armour (usually like a dress-thing to wear for dangerous travelling) that is made from lots of tiny rings/loops joined together to create a fine mesh-type thing. not very effective against rapers
