A stone basin for the baptism of new members of the church, often babies. The Font is often placed in the centre of the church so that the new member has to enter the church fully to get to the font. In years gone by it was placed at the entrance to the church to symbolise that being baptised is the entrance to the Christian faith.

In biblical times a font was any body of water where a covert could be completely immersed (Baptized). Since this form of baptism has now been change to a simple sprinkling of water, a font is usually a stone basin on a stand which holds water. Some churches who still believe in total submersion have fonts that hold sufficient water. Addition In the Roman Rite, "sprinkling" is not valid for baptising, living (poured) water or total submersion are the accepted form.

A font is used for baptism of new members of the Church, often babies. It is made of stone and in most cases, covered with intricate patterns. It is always filed with holy water. It is placed in the far end of the Church so that the new member has to walk the entire length of the Church to get to the font.

This is what would happen in the ordinary baptism of a baby:

They proceed by ducking the head of the baby under the holy water stored in the stone basin and then lift out the baby. The priest then dips his or her finger into the holy water and crosses the baby's head (by drawing onto the forehead of the baby with his or her wet finger). This completes the baptism and the child will then be Christaned and given a holy or Christian name.

The baptismal font may be almost anywhere in a Catholic church, although the directives from the Vatican call for it to be near the entrance.

We don't go to church so how can we get married in a church?

Many churches will hold weddings for people that aren't members of their congregation or who don't attend their services. You'll just have to ask around at some churches in your area to see if they will let you use their building. Be aware that some churches will charge extra fees to use their building if you are not a member of their church.
