A Constellation. There are 88 "official" constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union. There are any number of additional star arrangements, many derived from other cultures. These non-official constellations are called "asterisms". An asterism may include stars from two or more constellations, or may be a subset of stars from a single constellation.

For example, the "Big Dipper" is not a constellation, but an asterism. The official constellation "Ursa Major" or the "Great Bear" includes the eight stars of the Big Dipper, and several additional stars as well.
