In diffusion, molecules travel from a higher concentration to a lower concentration. When you put a drop of ink in a glass of water, the spreading of the ink in the water is called diffusion. Similarly, if you spray an air freshener in one corner of a room, eventually people on the other side of the room will be able to smell it as well because the scent has diffused.

In osmosis, molecules also travel from higher concentration to a lower concentration. However, osmosis specifically refers to the movement of WATER molecules. Both of these types of transport are examples of passive transport, which requires no energy.

Osmosis is for solids only, while diffusion is for both gases and liquids.

Well, for one diffusion is the process by which molecules spread from areas of high concentration, to areas of low concentration. When the molecules are even throughout a space which means they will move till equilibrium if they had the option. That is what everyone wants, everything to do in science is systems wanting to move to equilibrium.

Selectively Permeable - membranes that allow some things through, the cell membrane is selectively permeable, water and oxygen move freely across the cell's membrane, by diffusion

Osmosis - the diffusion of water (across a membrane)

Water will move in the direction where there is a high concentration of solute (and hence a lower concentration of water.

Therefore, osmosis is simply the diffusion of water!

osmosis refers to movement to the 'solvent' from its lower higher concentration to itslower con centration though semipermeabla membrane and occurs only in fluids whereas diffusion does not recquire semi.. and also occus in solids

The major difference is that diffusion is spelled "diffusion" and osmosis is spelled "osmosis". The different spelling is what makes them different. Maybe something else too, but I don't know. I think it has something to do with farting through your pants, or farting with your pants down, or something like that. If you have your pants on then the fart gas has to osmoss through your pants before it can diffuse.

Diffusion is the movement of substance (anything- solid ,liquid, gas, etc.) from a higher concentration gradient to a lower concentration gradient.

Osmosis is the net movement of water molecules from higher concentration gradient to a lower concentration gradient through a partially permeable membrane

So the difference is that diffusion involves movement of any particles (e.g. solid, liquid, gas) while osmosis can only occur with water.

Another one is that diffusion can occur with or without a membrane but osmosis can only occur with a membrane.

Osmosis is the movement of a solvent (water) into a cell where the concentration of a solute is higher, the lower concentration of solute being outside the root cells. Diffusion involves the spreading of a solute from areas of higher concentrations to areas of lower concentration within a solvent.

Osmosis is made possible by a semi-permeable membrane which allows the solvent in, instead of allowing the solute out.
