What is a dime?

Answer:
A "dime" is a denomination of coin in the U.S., Canada, and a few other countries. It's worth 10 cents, or 1/10 of a dollar.

The unusual name is left over from a proposed currency system that was supposed to be based on tens instead of hundreds. It comes from a French word meaning "one tenth".

The 10-based system was never adopted but the name of the coin stayed around due to common usage. Most other countries simply call their 10-cent coins, "10 cents"!
