While there are irrefutable reasons to use the services of a lawyer, you've asked instead only what the shortcomings are. Here are a few:
- Lawyers are expensive.
- Bringing a lawyer into a dispute will increase the tension level almost every time, and reduce changes for an amiable compromise-like solution.
- Everyone thinks their specialty in life will be a solution to most problems, and lawyers are no better nor worse than anyone else in this sense. They often seek to find resolutions that result in legal action, even in cases where legal action may not be the optimum solution for you.
- Lawyers like practicing law. As such, some of them enjoy suing you if there's any dispute about pay. If they do so, you'll need another lawyer to defend you, and the problem grows.
