What is a fantasy book?

In: Fantasy
[Edit]
A Fantasy book can be defined as a written story that comprises elements that are totally invented and imagined by the author, without reference to any real or existing thing. For a book to be a fantasy novel it must be comprised of elements such as characters, worlds, creatures, magical powers or species that do not exist and have never existed.

The Fantasy genre is most often associated with Legend, having found its roots mostly in Nordic and Celtic folklore in the West. Eastern and Middle-Eastern fantasy is more recent, though arguably stems from an older Asian culture.

Modern fantasy is an extremely popular genre, and in the last century a fantasy novel (J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings) became the most read book next to the bible.
