I've been using how-to books since I was a toddler, and there are dozens that can teach you about anatomy, perspective, proportions, etc. There are books on how to paint, sketch, and digitally draw everything from manga to clothes to animals and insects. They are much cheaper than taking an art class, and probably more valuable in the end, because you can go back to them over and over.
