Answer
Kechara gave you good advice, but I wanted to add on a little. My husband and I go fishing up country a lot and even though they have been given a flea/tick control (Advantage) every time we come back to camp I brush both the dogs and particularly pay attention to the face area and behind and around the ears and nose. If you should see a tick on your dog, take tweezers and be sure you are as close to the head of the tick as possible (you can't leave the head in the skin) and pull slowly towards you DON'T TWIST in a cork screw effect. If your dog is getting ticks and you are living in the country (bushy) or camping, ALWAYS brush your own hair and try to wear light clothing. If you are hiking and wearing long pants then tape the cuffs around your ankles and that also goes for a long sleeved shirt or blouse (tape around the wrists.) If you're wearing shorts then you'll know if you have a tick or not and have your partner or a friend check out your back and especially around the back of the neck AND YOUR SCALP. Believe it or not people being bitten by ticks isn't that high a percentage.

* Marcy is right.... I too have been bitten by a couple of ticks right at the nape of my neck both times. And I wasn't even in a heavily wooded area. I got them from my Grandparents back yard!!!!!!! (took my mother over an hour to remove the ticks safely. I also have another suggestion for tick removal should you find any latched on: Try putting baby oil all over their entire bodies before you pull them out. Ticks can breathe through their skin when feeding, if you cover them in baby oil they are no longer able to breathe and will be forced to loosen their grip in order to breathe. {this makes removal easier and less time consuming} Any time you go into an area where there is a possibility of exposure to ticks you should check over yourself and your animals Throughly.. Even if it is not heavily wooden. Kechara
You can try mixing a small amount of garlic into your dog's food (mix in with every other feeding). I have used this method with all of my dogs and it has worked wonders for them during the times I was unable to get to their vet to pick up their Flea and tick medication. HOWEVER, DO NOT DEPEND ON THE GARLIC ALONE {FOR A PROLONGED PERIOD OF TIME} YOU SHOULD ALWAYS USE IN CONJUNTION WITH ANOTHER FORM OF FLEA AND TICK CONTROL AS SOON AS IT IS POSSIBLE. Kechara
