A homogeneous mixture is a mixture of more than one substance that is consistent throughout the mixture. A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture where there are varying concentrations of the substances throughout the mixture.

Heterogeneous is unevenly mixed and homogeneous is evenly mixed.

Homogenous=not separable by mechanical methods

There are the two types of mixture systems, and the only similarity between the two is that each has two or more components.

Homogeneous: These are mixture systems that are:

Uniformly (equally) distributed,

Miscible (will dissolve),

Of a single phase,

Easily dispersed through a membrane,

Inseparable by mechanical means.

Chemical solutions are common examples. Some other examples are: salt and water, soap and water, hydrochloric acid and water, alcohol and water, sugar and water, ammonia water; and extracts of coffee beans or tea leaves (coffee or tea); phenolphthalein, alcohol, and water.

Heterogeneous:These are mixture systems that are:

Unequally (not uniformly) distributed,

Immiscible (won't dissolve),

May be of different phase,

Unable to disperse through most membranes,

Separable by mechanical means.

Some examples are: sand & water (liquid & solid), Orange Juice with pulp in it (liquid & solid), water with ice cubes in it (liquid & solid), chicken noodle soup (liquid & solid), oil & water (immiscible liquids), salad (solids & solids), trail mix (solids & solids), granite (solids in a solid), table salt crystals & sugar crystals (solids & solids), table salt crystals & iron filings (solids & solids) and the special category: colloids.

Related Information:

Colloids are sometimes, erroneously, referred to as homogeneous at the macro level, but observations at nanometer or microscopic levels, prove that these are heterogeneous, many having very small but varying particle sizes from 1 - 1000 nanometers, so they should never be considered truly homogeneous.

A heterogeneous mixture (solution) has: -variable composition
-variable temperature during change of state
and is...
-composed of 2 or more components
-single phased (meaning you can see one whole component)
-e.g. apple juice

A homogeneous mixture has: -variable composition
-variable temperature during change of state
and is...
-composed of 2 or more components
-has more than one phase (meaning you can see more than one components)
-e.g. salt and pepper mixed together
