Sickle-cell anemia is one of the most studied homozygous recessive disorders. It results in abnormal red blood cells that are sickle-shaped. This causes many complications with the blood.

Heterozygous means an individual that has two different versions of a gene. Scientists call these different versions of genes alleles. Recessive means that the effect of one allele is hidden by another allele called the dominant allele. Because recessive alleles are hidden by dominant alleles, the only way for a recessive allele to show itself in the traits (aka phenotype) of an individual is if the individual only has the recessive version of the alleles; in other words, the individual would have two copies of the recessive allele. When an individual has two copies of the same allele, scientists say that the individual is homozygous. So, a scientist probably wouldn't refer to an individual as heterozygous recessive, because an individual that's heterozygous will show the dominant form of the allele in its traits.

  • As an example, you could think about hair length in cats. The gene that controls hair length has two different alleles, a version that specifies long hair and a version for short hair. A cat that's heterozygous for these two alleles would have one of each allele, but would appear short-haired. That tells you that the short hair allele is dominant to the long hair allele; in other words, short hair hides long hair. You could represent the alleles of a heterozygous cat as Hh, where H represents the short hair allele and h represents the long hair allele. Cats that have two copies of the short hair allele would also have short hair, and could be represented as HH. Scientists would call these cats homozygous dominant. Long hair cats would always be hh and would be called homozygous recessive.

What is the probability of 2 heterozygous individuals producing a heterozygous recessive offspring?

The probability is 50%. There are four probabilities: dominant homozygous, recessive homozygous, or heterozygous.

Condition of being heterozygous for a recessive trait?

If you are heterozygous this means you carry both a dominant and recessive allele. if you are heterozygous for a recessive trait then you will have a dominant and recessive allele. example: let T represent tall and t represent short. a person with heterozygous for a recessive trait will have 'Tt'.

What does does heterozygous mean?

Heterozygous means that you are carrying 1 dominant trait and 1 recessive trait. If an allelic pair has one dominant and other recessive gene it is called heterozygous.

Homozygous dominant (Ex:AA) Heterozygous (Ex:Aa) Homozygous recessive (Ex:aa)

What is an organism with one dominant and one recessive gene for a trait?

that organism is a heterozygous one which contain the traits of recessive as well as dominant genes.

What is the difference between homzyguos and heterozyous?

Homozygous recessive: is when the genes are both recessive Homozygous dominant: is when the genes are both dominant (traits show) Heterozygous dominant: is when one gene is dominant and one is recessive (traits show) Heterozygous recessive: is the same as heterozygous dominant but the dominant genes are inactive

An example of a heterozygous recessive genotype is?

You can't have heterozygous dominant or recessive. A genotype is either homozygous dominant (MM), homozygous recessive (mm) or heterozygous (Mm). Hope it helps!
