Best Answer

there are three basic means of power transmission

mechanical

electrical and

fluid power

All these three are power transmission mediums

mechanical - short distance very advantageous.

electrical - long distance eg: hundreds of kilometres of electric grids.

hydraulics - greater distance than the mechanical and shorter than the electrical

They mostly substitute the mechanical power transmitters.

Here there are no moving links as in mechanical medium only moving medium that is fluid.

very high force multiplication possible.

only fluid power capable of giving constant force or torque output at various speeds.

they have very high power to weight ratio than there mechanical counterparts.

a simple, compact, reliable, safe system possible only with fluid power.

their control is very simple.

An Hydraulic system (and a pneumatic one as well) is simply a system using fluid to transfer energy from one point to another.

When I press the brake pedal, the brake cylinders at the wheels operate. Coupled together by an hydraulic system.

Depending on the system it could be any liquid. Some older metering systems actually used Mercury as a motive fluid (its expansion ability, and its weight for vacuum systems made it very useful without using pumps). Most hydraulic systems use oil, of one type or another. And high volume systems use water.

Hydraulics can be used basically everywhere in day to day life. They are used in your heart, in car brakes, in water pistels and also in vehicles like diggers and cranes.

Hydraulics

What are the applications of hydraulics?

Hydraulics are used in many application from your brakes in your car to large industrial machines. Hydraulics refers to a fluid system mainly used to generate a motion like controling a hydraulic cylinder (ram) or hydraulic motor. This system normally run on a type of oil.

What other things have hydraulics?

Vehicles have hydralics, basically most things that are related to engineering can be used or somehow linked to hydraulics.

Are hydraulics on airplanes?

Yes. They are used in wheels and...stuff....

Can solids or gases be used as hydraulics?

Solids do not flow at room temperature, so they are not practical for use in hydraulics. When a gas like air is used in a system similar to hydraulics, it is called pneumatics. Sometimes hydraulic systems use both, like in an automobile lift.

When are hydraulics used?

They are used by vehicals, engineering. They are used when vehicals move etc. They 'bounce'.

Where are hydraulics plus pneumatic systems used?

Nowhere As of now!

What type of fluid is used in hydraulics?

Fluid in motion or fluid in rest. (both can be used)

Why do you need hydraulics?

You don't need it but it looks really cool when used.

Why are liquids used in hydraulics instead of gasses?

liquids are easier to move.

Why are liquids good for Hydraulics?

Liquid is needed to use hydraulics. It's what makes hydraulics work.
