What is cool about red squirrels?

Red Squirrels are really cool. In fact these little guys are aggressive and will defend up to 5 acres of land against invasion by much larger squirrels and other animals. Red squirrels also know how to make syrup from trees, actually biting into them and then leaving to come back later after the water in the sap has evaporated to suck up the syrup. Req squirrels are brave and intelligent, which make them very cool in my book.

What are some examples of the Flora and Fauna unique to the USA that might interest a tourist?

SquirrelsYes, gray squirrels. We met some Italian tourists a few years ago and they loved watching the squirrels. Many Americans think squirrels are simply pests, but apparently they are fascinating to some Europeans. Squirrels are pretty clever, so maybe they should be considered a must-see on any urban "safari."PlantsAny plants are concidered flora.

Is Pepermint oil an effective repellent against squirrels?

Yes, it is. But since peppermint oil is volatile - meaning it evaporates (quicker in warmer weather) you do have to replenish it at least every couple weeks. Hopefully, the squirrels would lose interest during those couple weeks, but they may come back. If you are putting it on a bird feeder, that will work since birds do not have a sense of smell, but squirrels do. Keep in mind, squirrels will NEVER lose interest in the bird feeder, so some other solution like a cone on the bird feeder post would work better. If you want to keep them out of your attic, soak something, like a small rag or cotton ball, with the peppermint oil and stick it where you think the squirrels are getting in.

Why do squirrels hibernate during winter?

"Although squirrels seem to disappear from sight in the winter months, they are in the exact places where they lived during the warmer months. In fact, squirrels spend their entire lives within only three to five acres. Ground squirrels hibernate during the winter months, but tree squirrels do not. Tree squirrels keep warm by snuggling with their family in their tree nests or ground burrows. As soon as the weather permits, they emerge and begin hunting for food again. Squirrels are very sensitive to weather changes and prepare for an upcoming drop in temperature by instinctively burying their nuts underground as well as binge eating!"
