Briefly, ion channel is a channel ~ gateway ~ for ions to pass through the cell membrane, without the gateway, ions cannot pass through cell membranes. There are many types of ion channels, some allow only 1 way travel, some is both ways, some is exchange (eg. 2 Na for 1 K), others needs 2 types of ion to pass through (Na and K), some require energy to open, others are regulated by cell signals. Its a huge topic on its own and entire tomes of textbooks are written on them.
