There are 2 basic knitting stitches: stockinette stitch and garter stitch. The stockinette stitch is where you knit one side and purl the other which gives you a smooth side and a bumpy side. Garter stitch is where you knit every row which gives you a bumpy look on both sides.

SKPO stands for slip knit pass over. In other words, you slip one stitch, knit one stitch, then pass the slip stitch over the knitted stitch, thus decreasing one stitch in your row of knitting.

Why does my stockinette stitch look like a basic stitch?

Are you knitting? If by basic stitch, you mean garter stitch, it is because you are knitting on both sides of the work. It may also mean your working yarn is in the wrong place when you attempt to pearl a stitch. A stockinette stitch is achieved by knitting on one side of the work and pearling on the other. When knitting, the working yarn should be at the back of the work, away from you. When pearling, the working yarn should be pulled between the needle and the work,( closest to you) and then work the stitch the same as a knit stitch. This should fix your problem, but if not, please ask more questions.

When your done knitting how do you get it off with out wreaking it?

you must do what is known as a bind off or cast off ( same thing) you start by knitting the first two stitches as you have been knitting .. then using your left needle insert it into the first stitch you just knitted and pass it over the second stitch you just knitted .. you should have just one stitch again on the right needle .. now knit the next stitch and once again using the left needle pass the one stitch over the other .. continue one at a time knitting one stitch .. passing over.. knitting one stitch passing over till all but one stitch remains.. place yarn over the needle and pull thru remaining stitch .. pull to tighten ..

How many types of knitting are there?

Knitting is knitting, regardless of the yarn weight, needle type or stitch. And given this combination of variables, the differences are innumerable.
