The phrase "mainstream church" usually refers to the main or major Christian groups of the world, such as the Roman Catholic or the Eastern Orthodox Church. The opposite is the lesser-known or obscure groups, sometimes referred to as cults or sects.

A mainstream religion is one which adheres to the orthodox standard teachings of the main religions of the world. This means that Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism (the five largest religions) are termed 'mainstream' religions provided that the adherents to these religions follow the accepted teachings of them.

However, if a group does not adhere to the orthodox teaching of a particular religion then they cannot be classed as manistream. For example, within the Christian Church, all denominations such as Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists, Baptists etc can be classed as 'mainstream' Christian denominations as they all follow the accepted Christian teaching of a Trinitarian God and the divinity of Christ. However, Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses cannot be classed as 'mainstream' denominations as they have unorthodox beliefs (eg JWs do not believe in the Trinity) that lie outside the accepted beliefs of the Christian Church.

What is the Mormons' difference to the polygamist ones?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) banned the practice of polygamy in 1890. Those who disagreed with this ban branched off and created their own churches (such as the Fundamentalist LDS, the Apostolic United Brethren, and others). These polygamist groups are in no way a part of the mainstream Mormon Church and have their own leadership. They believe that the mainstream Mormon Church has apostatized from the truth, but share similar beliefs about such things as the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith, eternal families, and modern revelation.

What do people not like about the Mormon church?

----------------------- Anecdotal evidence is that some mainstream Christians see too much paganism in the Latter Day Saints religion. It is simply too different for them to accept. Even the Mormon Church, itself, keeps new converts uninformed about some doctrines until they are ready for this and for temple worship - apparent recognition by the LDS Movement that mainstream Christians do have a point here.

What lifestyle did the Mormon wives practice where the husband had more than 1 wife?

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (the "Mormon" church) allowed men to have more than one wife for a period of 50 years, between 1840 and 1890. This practice was called "polygamy" or "plural marriage". Polygamy has been banned in the Mormon church for over 120 years, and anyone found attempting to marry multiple wives is excommunicated from the church. There were some who disagreed with the polygamy ban. These broke off and formed their own groups, many of which still exist today. These groups have similar beliefs to the mainstream Mormon church, but still practice polygamy. They call themselves "Fundamentalist Mormons". There are less than 100,000 Fundamentalist Mormons, and there are over 14,000,000 Mainstream Mormons. The Mainstream Mormons and the Fundamentalist Mormons generally do not accept each other as legitimate.
