The phrase "mainstream church" usually refers to the main or major Christian groups of the world, such as the Roman Catholic or the Eastern Orthodox Church. The opposite is the lesser-known or obscure groups, sometimes referred to as cults or sects.

∙ 13y agoA mainstream religion is one which adheres to the orthodox standard teachings of the main religions of the world. This means that Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism and Hinduism (the five largest religions) are termed 'mainstream' religions provided that the adherents to these religions follow the accepted teachings of them.
However, if a group does not adhere to the orthodox teaching of a particular religion then they cannot be classed as manistream. For example, within the Christian Church, all denominations such as Roman Catholics, Anglicans, Methodists, Baptists etc can be classed as 'mainstream' Christian denominations as they all follow the accepted Christian teaching of a Trinitarian God and the divinity of Christ. However, Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses cannot be classed as 'mainstream' denominations as they have unorthodox beliefs (eg JWs do not believe in the Trinity) that lie outside the accepted beliefs of the Christian Church.
