A marker bull is a bull that is used to detect cows in heat but not breed them. The cows that he detects to be in heat are put in a chute to be artificially inseminated.

Marker bulls are also called Gomer bulls. Such bulls are bulls that are not desirable for breeding due to structural soundness issues or inferior genetics, and are altered in such away that they are still able to be sensitive to the female's estrus/estrous levels and retain testosterone levels but is unable to conceive successfully. A marker or gomer bull wears a halter with a chin ball attached which enables him to "mark" the cow or heifer that is in heat when he mounts her.
