What is a maul?

A maul is a piece of Rugby Union where it is either formed after a kick-off or after a line-out. It is when most of the forwards push and bind against one of the Locks when he is carrying the ball. In a line-out, when the Hooker throws the ball between the rows, you have two options - for the Locks or Loose forwards (Flanks and Eighthman) to jump up (also supported by any other two forwards) and palm it immediately to the Scrum-Half or for them to form this piece by just coming down from the jump without passing.

If the maul collapses by accident (every forward using too much strength not on purpose) then nothing is wrong. But if one binder deliberately bring it down then your opposition team with get a penalty - or, if it is pushing to tryline, and you collapse it on purpose again, it awards to your opposition a penalty try.
