220 minus your age. Therefore if you are 30 220-30=190 However there are various other methods of calculation. It also depends on what exercise you are doing and how fit you are already. check out this website. in US Navy SEALs heart rates above 200bpm have been measured on EKG. at rates this high the SEALs were able to wire explosives and discharge there firearms, but were unable to do en simple math problems i.e. 2+2=4. : Maximal heart rate is the highest number of times per minuet that your heart can contract. In Humans the maximal heart rate is about 200 BPM. Sinus tachycardiac is a heart rate of more than 100 BPM. Fast heart rate decreases coronary blood flow fill leading to an increased demand of oxygen on the heart. This means that you should not keep your heart beating at its maximal rate for too long. Fibbrilation is a high heart rate which occurs in a disease of the heart that causes the electrical signals in the heart to become very rapid and irregular the heart rate for fibbrilation is about 300 -600 BPM. Dont worry though your heart cannot go into fibbrilation unless there is a heart disease which causes it to happen and a heart rate of 200 BPM is NOT fast enough to causes fibbrilation in the heart. : I hope you find this helpful : http://wiki.answers.com/Q/How_heart_works&alreadyAsked=1

The target heart rate, as its name suggests, is what people aim for after getting their average heart rates. It reflects a person's ideal fitness level, however it isn't completely accurate, since it is just an estimate. To get the targeted heart rate, you must, first, get the maximum heart rate (MHR). Subtract your age from 220. The result is your maximum heart rate. Once done, subtract your average heart rate from MHR, which gives you your Heart Rate Reserve (HRR). Multiply HRR with 0.60 then take down the result. Multiply HRR with 0.80. Once you have both values, add them up then divide the sum by two.
