The working conditions vary for a mechanical engineer depending on his job. Most positions are salary so the hours range based on the project you are working on. I've worked 30 hours one week and 60 the next. Most of the time your company will only want you to work about 40 hours a week.

Physical conditions for Mechanical engineering can be anywhere from a sit behind a computer doing sales consulting or CAD drawings, or it could be field work, where you are outside inspecting or repairing equipment. I depends on what field you find a mechanical engineering position in. When looking for a job, I got offers from working on a oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico to doing aluminum window designs in AutoCAD. No matter what your personality, there are job conditions that can fit what you are looking for. The best way to get them though is experience and that takes time.

A mechanical engineer works with groups of other engineering disciplines to design and construct a system of some type. It is very interactive and requires high degrees of concentration under a steady hail of chaos. Engineering is still male dominant and very competitve.

Typically, the Mechanical Engineer will attend meetings and interact with other disciplines to collect vital information, then design the mechanical parts required to structurally tie all together. Most of the day can be consumed in front of a computer, performing Computer Aided Design (CAD). Today's Mechanical Engineer has also assumed the duties of Draftsman (the intricate detailing of parts) due to software advancements.

The job is project oriented and executed under very tight schedule constraints. As such, overtime is common (though usually not compensated) and when the project is near completion, the engineer should be looking for another assignment, either within their own walls or elsewhere. Layoffs are notoriously high for engineers.

Ever since the development of CAD, the PEng has become more of an administrator/QA/goof catcher He could be responsible for affixing his seal to work done by members of a cubicle farm as large as 50 associates/technologists/video gamers He may not do any more engineering after he gets his ring and seal, for, when he does, luckily, catch a 'technologist's error, it will go back to be 'fixed' by the same, or another, typer on a graphics programme which will allow the creation of any irrational drawing which may or may not actually work in the real world Engineers of all stripes are now the victims of 'paraprofessionalism', i.e. one professional supervising and responsible for a clan of 2-year tech institute certificate holders No longer will an engineer have the opportunity of reviewing and double-checking his work as he carefully hand-draws his plan More and more work is now and will continue to be done by poorer educated and less qualified personnel He may only see his 'work' in action when one of his underlings has managed to get substandard work past him, during an operational failure A PEng these days embodies the saying; "Success has a thousand fathers, but, failure is an orphan" or, perhaps, the offspring of the poor devil whose seal is on the last drawing, and whose ring is on the line
