What is a mehmet - as in Ataturk's mention of the 'johnies and mehmets in the plaque at Gallipoli?

mehmet is the short version of muhammed, in Ataturk's mention it is used to describe the Turkish soldiers. even today the soldiers of Turkey are mentioned as "mehmetcik" Ataturk meant that, since johnies and mehmets are lying here together, they've become our sons.
