What is a mint mark? |
[Edit] |
Answer
Usually one letter, sometimes two, indicating which mint produced a coin. The current US mintmarks are P for Philadelphia, D for Denver, and (for proof coins only) S for San Francisco, and (for commemoratives and gold only) W for West Point. Until recently coins from Philadelphia did not have a mintmark (except for nickels minted during WWII), but currently only the one cent piece is minted without the P. There have also been coins marked O for New Orleans, CC for Carson City, and a few others.
