What is a non commissioned officer?

[Edit]
Non-commissioned officers (NCO) are those from the enlisted men or women who hold the rank of Lance Corporal or equivalent (one stripe), through to those who hold the most senior Sergeant (or equivalent) rank. Warrant Officers, although the most senior of non-commissioned officers, are a breed apart and known as the backbone of the military.

Also lookup NCO Creed and read that to get a idea.

The ranks differ from each military service. In the army the NCO's are:

Corporal (CPL)

Sergeant (SGT)

Staff-Sergeant (SSG)

Sergeant First Class (SFC)

Master Sergeant (MSG)

First Sergeant (1SG)

Sergeant Major

Command Sergeant Major (CSM)

Sergeant Major of the Army
