The most common cause is a deep bruise or "charley horse" (what doctors call an ecchymosis). It usually heals within a week or two, often feeling a little better each day.

If it is a smaller lump, it is very possible that this could be an infected cyst or abscess, just below the skin.

If this is not the case, and the lump persists, unchanged, for days and/or weeks, then it would be important to have this situation evaluated by a physician.
