In the Harry Potter series, a Patronus is a charm meant to help defend yourself against dementors. Remus Lupin taught the spell to Harry in his third year. It creates an etherial creature that can deliver messages and chase away bad guys.

A Patronus is the only spell known to fend off Dementors. Each person's patronus takes on a different form, for example, Harry Potter's patronus is a stag, while Hermione's patronus is an otter. The incantation to produce a patronus is quite complicated. First the spell caster must think of an incredibly happy memory, as Dementor's feed off of unhappy memories, then the spell caster says the incantation, "expecto patronum" and either a wisp of silver smoke will protrude from the user's wand, of a full patronus will emerge (the animal shape).

A Patronus is something like a silvery substance that is supposed to represent you. It all depends on your personality, how you react to such things. Harry Potter's Patronus is a Stag if you didn't know, that means he is caring, brave, and stands up for others. There might be some more contributing factors on why his Patronus is a stag, also.

In other words, Patronouses repel Dementors.

In Harry Potter, a Patronus is a charm. The incantation for the Patronus charm is "Expecto Patronum."

The Patronus charm produces a white, light-like animal suited individually to each wizard or witch. For the caster of the spell, the animal is a protector. The Patronus is the only known spell that repels Dementors, as well as Lethifolds.

Additionally, Patronuses can also carry short messages to others without being hampered by walls or being intercepted, as used by the Order of the Phoenix.

A Patronus is a kind of positive force, and for the wizard who can conjure one, it works something like a shield, with the Dementor feeding on it, rather than him. In order for it to work, you need to think of a memory. Not just any memory, a veryhappy memory, a very powerful memory... Allow it to fill you up... lose yourself in it... then speak the incantation "Expecto Patronum - Remus Lupin

.

It is a shield used to drive dark forces like Dementors or Lethifolds. For advanced wizards or witches it will take the form of an animal. Since it is not human and purely made of good memories it cannot be destroyed by dark magic.
