2400 on the new SAT:

800 on the Critical Reading section

800 on the Math section

800 on the Writing section

A perfect score in the old SAT was a 1600 because there was not a writing section.

This really depends on what college you want to get into. If you're shooting for MIT, well... you're going to need to get something in the 700s, but for most colleges, something in the 500s will be good. Although there isn't an "overall scale", I would grade the scores as such (by the way, the scores are for each section, not communitive): 200-290: poor 300-390: not good 400-490: below average 500-590: average 600-640: good 650-690: very good 700-740: excellent 750-800: amazing It also depends a lot on who you're comparing yourself with. If you're competing against an academically tough environment like Monta Vista High, where below 2100 is considered "pretty low" and a "must-retake" score, then "high" would be over 2200. If your high school isn't so competitive, then, well, what's a "high" score is probably best determined through your own judgement.
